Welcome to Michigan's American Legion Wilwin at Cygnet Cove!

A premiere veteran's sanctuary for rehabilitation, reconnect, recovery and renewal

A nationally recognized facility, Wilwin at Cygnet Cove sits on 1183 acres in a peaceful wooded arena approximately 5 miles south of the farming community of Custer, in Mason County, Michigan.  Wilwin is a place for hope and healing; recovery and renewal; education and inspiration; sharing and support.

Wilwin is home to an abundance of wildlife including white-tail deer, black bear, rabbits, fox, coyote, porcupine, skunk, bald and golden eagles, ducks and geese, wild turkeys, squirrels and other small animals.

The main house acts as the center of our housing area.  Handicapped accessible, the main house has four bedrooms and three full bathrooms capable of housing 8-12 people.  A wrap-around porch on the south and west sides of the house overlooks the 65 acre spring-fed lake.

A fully ADA compliant apartment that can house two people is available adjacent to the main house.  The two bedroom apartment is located above the ADA compliant apartment and can house up to 5 people comfortably but is not ADA accessible.

The caretaker’s cabin doubles as an office.  The office is located in front of the building and has one bedroom and a futon in the living room.  The apartment can comfortably house 3 people.  Called the “caretaker’s cabin,” the caretakers for the property of the former owner stayed in this building.  Wilwin’s current care-taker/manager stays in a camper trailer on the property, therefore freeing up more room for our veterans.

Four cabins and a recreational hall will be built in the spring of 2017 in a new area currently referred to as “Veteran’s Village.”  Four more cabins are planned each year for 2018 and 2019.  Cabins will be fully functional and designed for two people each.  All buildings will be ADA compliant.

The 65 acre spring-fed lake, Woodruff Lake, has a dock with pontoon boat, paddle boats, canoes, and kayaks.   Veteran’s who stay at Wilwin may fish the lake.  There is a sandy swimming beach and a children’s playground nearby.  An ADA accessible boat house has a bathroom and a central area for 10-12 people to hold indoor picnics, BBQ’s cookouts, other gatherings, or enjoy games and other recreational activities.  The back acreage of the lake is a high marsh which creates the headwaters of the Pentwater River via drainage from the spring- fed waters from Woodruff Lake.

Wilwin has over 15 miles of recreational trails within its boundaries that can be used for hiking, running, golf-cart driving, and bicycling.  There is acreage with milkweed.  This attracts the migration of thousands of monarch butterflies on their way south in the fall.  Trails lead into the marsh to a walkway and an observation platform for the observation of waterfowl and wildlife.

The facility is within a few miles of the nationally famous Pere Marquette River, rich in boating activities and fishing.  The Pere Marquette River is, also, the longest, undammed river in Michigan.

Deep sea fishing for salmon and trout is available at the harbor in Ludington, 15 miles to the west.  Charter boats run regularly during the season.
